Dear Friends:

Two themes you may want to consider this week are my
Anglican Journal column on "the Spirit of Haida Gwaii"
and the annual Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem.

The world needs to realize that there was more than one
holocaust (though one was one too many). Canada's
Indigenous People went through their own, and are still
doing so. A sign of hope for all humanity is the "Spirit
of Haida Gwaii" a beautiful coastal native creation in many
forms, by the great Canadian aboriginal carver Bill Reid.
Please check that out by clicking the link below.

Hopefully, other items assembled here will be of interest.

Wayne

PS A reminder. If a link, below seems to be dead, cut and
paste it into the address bar at the top of your web page
and it should work.

WISDOM OF THE WEEK

Provided by Sojourners and the Bruderhof online:

A man is called selfish not for pursuing his own good,
but for neglecting his neighbor's.

- Richard Whately

--

Humanly speaking, we could understand and interpret the
Sermon on the Mount in a thousand different ways. Jesus
knows only one possibility: simple surrender and obedience,
not interpreting it or applying it, but doing and obeying it.

That is the only way to hear his word. He does not mean that
it is to be discussed as an ideal; he really means us to get
on with it.

- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

--

For all its silence, the sky has a language. Without any words
the stars speak many things right into our hearts. They tell of
God’s (his) wisdom, his loving care; they tell of (his)
fathomless infinity, yet they also give us a sense of how very
close and friendly (he) is. (He) seems distant, because (he)
is so great, and on the other hand (he) seems near, looking
on us as (he) does, through the eyes of the heavens.

- Johann Christoph Blumhardt

MOMENT IN TIME

Prohibition in the USA, January 1932

The Globe and Mail
January 22nd, 2020

Prohibition was in many ways a feminist cause. Male
legislators may have drafted and ratified the 18th
Amendment – and the Anti-Saloon League, founded
by Howard Hyde Russell, is usually credited with
leading the final push – but it was decades of activism
by groups such as the Woman’s Christian Temperance
Union that finally convinced the United States to ban
the sale, production and transportation of alcohol.

The WCTU saw it as a way to end the abuse of alcoholic
husbands. But then there were other women – who had
been drinking quietly at home and social gatherings.

Prohibition allowed women to drink “publicly” in the
illegal but welcoming establishments that replaced
men-only saloons, changing the way Americans
socialized for decades to come.

– Massimo Commanducci

CLOSING THOUGHT -  Teihard de Chardin

Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides
and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love.
And then, for the second time in the history of the world,
man will have discovered fire.
