Dear Friends -
My Anglican Journal column on -
"Co-creating With the Divine - in a Classical Sense"
- appears earlier than usual in the month of February
- because it relates to this month's AJ theme of art,
music and culture. I try to share how blessed we
Canadians are - right across the country - in terms
of access to high quality arts that expose us to
divine spirituality.
Many other items help to make this issue of
Colleagues List something to think about.
I hope you enjoy it!
Wayne

We must never forget that so long as one group
can be targeted with hate, no group is safe.

Do good, and with a simple heart share the
fruits of your labor, which God gives to you,
with all those who are poor, not wondering to
whom you should give and to whom you should
not give. Give to all, for God wishes that you
give to all from his gifts to you.

Prisons do not disappear social problems,
they disappear human beings. Homelessness,
unemployment, drug addiction, mental illness,
and illiteracy are only a few of the problems
that disappear from public view when the
human beings contending with them are
relegated to cages.

Christ says: Do according to what I say – ah
then you shall know. Consequently, decisive
action first of all. By acting, your life will come
into collision with existence, and then you will
know the reality of grace. Nowadays we have
turned the whole thing around. Christianity has
become a worldview.Thus, before I get involved
I must first justify it. Good night to Christianity!
- Søren Kierkegaard

Time itself is neutral; it can be used either
destructively or constructively. More and more
I feel that the people of ill will have used time
much more effectively than have the people
of good will. We will have to repent in this
generation not merely for the hateful words
and actions of the bad people, but for the
appalling silence of the good people.
Human progress never rolls in on wheels of
inevitability; it comes through the tireless efforts
of men willing to be coworkers with God, and
without this hard work, time itself becomes an
ally of the forces of stagnation.

Six killed in Quebec City mosque shooting
January 29th, 2017
When a gunman opened fire at Quebec City’s Islamic Cultural
Centre on this day in 2017, Aymen Derbali tried to draw his
attention. The father of three succeeded, and took bullets to
the knee and chin. He would be unable to walk when he
emerged from a two-month coma, a victim of the shooting –
and also one of its heroes. Six people lost their lives that
night, including Azzeddine Soufiane, a 57-year-old grocer
who tried to stop the carnage by tackling the shooter.
Shortly after fleeing the mosque, 27-year-old Alexandre
Bissonnette confessed to the attack. He had recently become
obsessed with far-right ideology and anti-immigrant leaders
such as U.S. President Donald Trump and France’s Le Pen.
He pleaded guilty to six counts of murder and was given a
life sentence with no chance of parole for 40 years. Quebec
politicians of all stripes condemned the killings, which
prompted a moment of reckoning with Islamophobia in
Quebec society and in the West more broadly. Meanwhile,
three psychologists who assessed Bissonnette in custody
testified during his sentencing that he continued to show
limited empathy for his victims.

CLOSING THOUGHT - I.R. Knost
Until our world decides that every human matters,
that everyone has a right to food and safety and
freedom and healthcare and equality, it is the
obligation of those privileged to have food and
safety and freedom and healthcare and equality
to fight tirelessly for those who do not.
