Dear Friends:

Cataract surgery has prevented me from sending my
weekly letters to you recently, but hopefully I am now
able to send you a regular edition of Colleagues List
starting next week. I am grateful for improving sight.

A number of you have submitted new books and
other items for promotion here, and I will tend to
that over the next weeks.

In the meantime, enjoy the wisdom, below.

Also, Labour Day weekend (for those who have it).

I am also letting you know about our fall Zoom
ACTS programming at St. David's United., below.

Blessings!

Wayne

WISDOM OF THE WEEK
From Sojourners and the Bruderhof online:

Going high doesn’t mean putting on a smile and saying
nice things when confronted by viciousness and cruelty.
Going high means taking the harder path. It means
scraping and clawing our way to that mountain top.

- Michelle Obama

--

Peace is not merely the absence of visible conflict.
Only a just peace based on the inherent rights and
dignity of every individual can truly be lasting.

- Barack Obama

--

In the flush of love's light / we dare be brave /
And suddenly we see / that love costs all we are /
and will ever be. / Yet it is only love / which sets us free.

- Maya Angelou

--

Responsibility to yourself means refusing to let others do
your thinking, talking, and naming for you; it means learning
to respect and use your own brains and instincts; hence,
grappling with hard work.

- Adrienne Rich

-

There are those who give little of the much which they have –
and they give it for recognition and their hidden desire makes
their gifts unwholesome. And there are those who have little
and give it all. These are the believers in life and the bounty
of life, and their coffer is never empty.

 - Kahlil Gibran

--

It is when things go wrong, when the good things do not
happen, when our prayers seem to have been lost, that
God is most present. We do not need the sheltering wings
when things go smoothly. We are closest to God in the
darkness, stumbling along blindly. There is no such thing
as belief without doubt or struggle.

- Madeleine L’Engle

--

You do not need to know precisely what is happening,
or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to
recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by
the present moment, and to embrace them with courage,
faith and hope. In such an event, courage is the authentic
form taken by love.

- Thomas Merton

--

As long as we keep dividing our lives between events
and people we would like to remember and those we
would rather forget, we cannot claim the fullness of our
beings as a gift of God to be grateful for. Let's not be
afraid to look at everything that has brought us to where
we are now and trust that we will soon see in it the guiding
hand of a loving God.

- Henri Nouwen

--

As long as we look for some kind of pay for what we do,
as long as we want to get something from God in some
kind of exchange, we are like the merchants. If you want
to be rid of the commercial spirit, then by all means do all
you can in the way of good works, but do so solely for the
praise of God. Live as if you did not exist. Expect and ask
nothing in return. Then the merchant inside you will be
driven out of the temple God has made. Then God alone
dwells there. See! This is how the temple is cleared: when
a person thinks only of God and honors him alone. Only
such a person is free and genuine.

- Meister Eckhart
