SPECIAL ITEM

ON MY PRESENT INFORMATION OVERLOAD

As most of you my readers would recognize, I sift through
a good deal of material to make the final selections for each
issue of Colleagues List. There are times when I feel that, in
doing this, I suffer from brain fatigue.

I think I am struggling with an attack like that right now.

There are many things that could be said about the truck
convoy, the virus, and the Ukrainian crisis - to name but a
few of the concerns that have overwhelmed me these past
few weeks.

Perhaps many of you my readers are feeling much like me and
would understand when I feel there is little I have to say.

I continue to prepare for my classes at church (though there is
a Family Weekend break coming up) so I have not thrown in
the towel!

Still I hope you will understand and enjoy the material from
many others that appears, below.

Hopefully, next issue of Colleagues List will reflect my old self.
If you are feeling like me right now, I invite you to pray for
my spiritual renewal as I pray for you.

Wayne

WISDOM OF THE WEEK

From Sojourners and the Bruderhof online:

One who has loved is never quite alone,
though all the hills declare our solitude.
Having known you, I am no more afraid,
the essential singleness of blood and bone
when dispossessed, comes never in return;
one who has loved is never quite alone.

- Jane Tyson Clement

--

Nobody should have to hide who they are inside to please people on the outside.

- Terry McMillan

--

If we owned anything, we should have to have weapons to protect ourselves. That is what gives rise to contentions and lawsuits, and so often causes the love of God and neighbor to be interfered with. For ourselves, we are resolved to possess nothing temporal in this world.

- St. Francis of Assisi

--

We can only live the changes we wish to see; we cannot think our way to humanity. Every one of us, and every group with which we live and work, must become the model of the era which we desire to create.…All of us are crippled – some physically, some mentally, some emotionally. We must therefore strive cooperatively to create the new world. There is no time left for destruction, for hatred, and for anger. We must build – in hope, and in joy, and in celebration.

- Ivan Illich

--

Why is it that we are so busy with the future? ...Is there not a criminal interference with him to whom it belongs, in our feverish, anxious attempts to dispose of it, and in filling it up with shadows of good and evil shaped by our own wild imaginations? To do God’s will as fast as it is made known to us, to inquire hourly – I had almost said each moment – what he requires of us, and to leave ourselves, our friends, and every interest at his control, with a cheerful trust that the path which he marks out leads to our perfection and to himself, this is at once our duty and happiness; and why will we not walk in the plain, simple way?

- William Ellery Channing

--

Silence is the language of faith. Action – be it church or charity, politics or poetry – is the translation. As with any translation, action is a mere echo of its original, inevitably faded and distorted, especially as it moves farther from its source. There the comparison ends, though, for while it is true that action degrades that original silence, and your moments of meditative communion with God can seem a world away from the chaotic human encounters to which those moments compel you, it is also true that without these constant translations into action, that original, sustaining silence begins to be less powerful, and then less accessible, and then finally impossible.

- Christian Wiman

--

We all must decide in our own consciences what side we will take. God our Lord is offering us marvelous fruits if we let him sow in us that sprout which will produce prolific branches, the fruits of eternal life. This is God’s plan, and that’s why the church is the vineyard where God’s kingdom will always be in crisis. Blessed are those who feel the crisis deeply and resolve it by committing themselves to our Lord. I am very glad that precisely in this hour of crisis many who were asleep have woken up and are at least asking where the truth is to be found. Look for it! Saint Paul shows us the way: it is found with prayer, reflection, and esteem for what is good. These are wonderful criteria. Wherever there is something noble, something good, something just, there we find God.

- Oscar Romero
